I’ve lived alone in a spacious apartment for a couple of years, and my boyfriend and I have had a few conversations about him moving in. I want to make sure it’s still my place if we break up after he moves in. If it doesn’t work out, will I be able to kick him out?

Making a Move, Bloorcourt

If your boyfriend is indeed move-in material, he’ll understand your reluctance to give up domestic sovereignty. Invite him to live with you without signing the lease. Frame it as a reasonable stepping stone to full cohabitation—a low-stakes trial period to see how things turn out—rather than as an exit strategy. Because your boyfriend won’t be a tenant, you can’t legally force him to pony up a portion of the rent, but you can (and probably should) break up with him if he decides to stop paying just because the law says he can.
