How to maximize your living space

Here are some clever tricks to make your current space feel twice as big.

Discover unused space. Go beyond your designated rooms to find new ways to use space you didn’t even know you had. Turn that awkward corner between the bedroom and linen closet into a reading nook with a comfy chair and wall-mounted light. Create a breakfast nook in your front or back porch with a tiny patio set. Get outside and finally use your condo balcony by planting a few bulbs or herbs in a miniature garden.

Think visually. Optical illusions trick the eye into seeing a more spacious area. Hang curtains higher and wider than necessary to make windows appear larger and brighter. Use clean, simple lines and materials in soothing colours to improve the flow in a space. Create extra storage and draw the eye upward by extending bookcases and cabinets all the way up to the ceiling, or place decorative items on top of existing ones for the same visual effect.

Make every item count. If you’re trying to make the most of the space you have, be sure that everything in it serves a purpose — functional, beautiful or both. Take advantage of items that do double duty, like attractive chests that serve as storage and at the same time as a coffee or side table. Day beds, nesting tables, folding chairs, secretaries and ottomans work wonders in close quarters. If you can’t find the right size or shape for your space, don’t be afraid to opt for a customized creation — think built-ins, breakfast bars and tailored furniture. Investing in an item that’ll work perfectly in your home is worth it, or you try your hand at a DIY version using an online tutorial.

Perfect your shelving strategy. Shelves can create unexpected storage space and help to visually expand your room. Try floor-to-ceiling bookcases to make use of every inch of a wall, using pretty storage boxes or baskets to hide more unsightly objects. You can also hang floating shelves in an overlooked blank space to add more decorative elements or arrange books and magazines. If you have more limited wall space, antique-looking hooks create visual interest and are great for hanging things like jewellery, scarves or even that cozy sweater you often leave lying around.

Edit, then edit some more. Always be vigilant about tidying up messes and clutter. Organize knick-knacks in attractive containers, like glass vases or mason jars. Finally, edit your existing furnishings and décor at least once a season — only keep and display what you really need, as fewer items create an airy, roomier feeling.
